Yesterday was a sea day on our way from Hobart to Kangaroo Island. There was talk of canceling the visit to Kangaroo Island because the seas were so rough (30' swells). Forunately the Captain took an alternate route that hugged the shore during the roughest part of the sail so we were able to get to the island . Larry and I both spent most of the day in our cabin as we weren't feeling the best.
We spent today (Valentine's Day) touring Kangaroo Island. From Penneshaw Ferry Terminal we took a 90 minute drive to Flinders Chase National Park which was on the other side of the island. There is almost no traffic on the island and no stop signs or stop lights. There weren't many scenic views on the ride but we did stop to see a kangaroo who was hanging out by the side of the road.
Once we got to Flinders Chase National Park we knew the long ride was worth it. The setting of Admirals Arch and the Remarkable Rocks was amazing. Unfortunately it was cloudy when we were there so the photos don't do the area justice. Every view was breath taking!
Below are photos of Admiral's Arch. The arch was formed by erosion from the wind and surging seas. Lots of fur seals on the rocks below!
Then we were off to see the Remarkable Rocks. They were formed 500 million years ago by rain, wind and the pounding seas. These huge rocks are made of granite boulders. From the photos it's hard to see how large they are.
Next we went to find koalas and kangaroos out in the wild. Our guide was spotting them at first but after a bit we were able to find them ourselves. We spotted a kangaroo but only when we were almost standing next to him!
Our guide looking for koalas. It can give you a stiff neck! |
We stopped near a 9 hole golf course and Vivonne Bay on our way back to the ship. In addition, we saw some interesting mailboxes. People only get mail delivery twice a month here.
Mailboxes were interesting - some were old refrigerators! |
Next stop: Adelaide.
